In recent years the quintet has been widely acknowledged as the creator of a new musical phenomenon in Finland, nuevo tango finlandés. With a deep respect to the Piazzollian tradition, the quintet has, together with world class composers, soloists and vocalists of our time truly revolutionized the nuevo tango genre.

The last few years the quintet has worked intensively together with the extremely talented argentinian singer Martin Alvarado. Combining innovative elements of tango nuevo finlandés and the rich tradition and roots of Argentinean tango we have an outstanding phenomenon at hand, “Tango Norte, Tango Sur”. This project has produced a new and surprisingly fresh tango and even multiplied to a huge symphonic project “El concierto del Nuevo tango”. Eight remarkable pieces flowing on stage, combining traditional tango roots, three of them from Gardel, Stamponi and Piazzolla arranged to a totally new shape; five of them composed by Otra Vez itself expressing the whole scale of tanguedian influences with music as a radically free material. The project started as a co-operation with Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä and its famous conductor-in-chief and flutist Patrick Gallois. Later it was performed with Oulu, Kuopio and Kymi Symphony orchestras. Now the project seeks its way to all stages where quality music is needed and wanted.

In 2010 Otra Vez wrote a full concert of music for tango quintet, soloist and big band. The project culminated in a sold out concert on the 6th of May 2010 together with UMO Jazz Orchestra, one of the top big bands in the world.

In august 2010 Otra Vez was invited to perform on the notorious Buenos Aires Tango Festival, together with Martin Alvarado. The concerts in Buenos Aires gained special critical acclaim, and the band was noted as one of the world’s most innovative tango nuevo ensembles.

In 2011 Otra Vez is renewing itself once again. In April 2011 Otra Vez wrote and performed a completely new program together with world famous classical flutist Patrick Gallois. Otra Vez also wrote a full concert program of new compositions for tango quintet and string orchestra – the project was comissioned by Mikkeli Strings, a renowned Finnish string orchestra, that also made the first performance together with Otra Vez in May 2011.

In june 2011 Otra Vez composed and arranged an electroacoustic program together with the Finnish jazz trumpetist Verneri Pohjola. The world premiere of this project was held at the Jyväskylä Summer Festival in July.

In the spirit of tango nuevo finlandés Otra Vez has released two CDs. “Nuevo Tango” (OTRCD1,2002) includes 10 pieces by Piazzolla and three pieces representing nuevo tango finlandés, composed by Matti Laukkanen and Markus Elgland, members of the quintet. The featuring guest in the CD is world-famous vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo. “Otra Vez” (OTRCD2, 2005, SACD-format) includes four pieces by Piazzolla (one of them the exceptional rarity “Introduccion a Héroes y Tumbas”) and six pieces representing nuevo tango finlandés, pieces ordered by Otra Vez and composed for this CD by Finnish contemporary composers. The CD introduces the string orchestra La Nueva Orquesta de Cuerdas as well. The CD was picked as one of “The record of the year 2005” –list by the biggest Finnish newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. “Otra Vez” also includes a DVD-booklet telling tango stories and opening Finnish cultural landscapes (in Spanish, German and English).

In the spirit of “Tango norte, Tango sur” the third CD (Alba Records ABCD 268, 2008), also carrying the name of the phenomenon, Otra Vez presents the outstanding Argentinean singer Martin Alvarado. Arrangements for traditional tango pieces by Otra Vez are Nuevo, in deed, and Alvarado takes care of the rest!
